A-Level Law tutor, and I work in law.

Most tutoring sites will match you with an undergraduate. I am someone working in law with a First-Class Law degree, a Master's in Law and 1,000+ hours of A-Level Law tutoring — and I wrote every module I teach from.

Why Law is different

It is two skills, not one.

Which is exactly why generic tutoring does not move the grade.

You have to cite with precision

Not "there was a case about this". The name, roughly the year, and the specific principle it established. Examiners reward the authority, not the gist. Most students lose marks here before they have written a word of analysis.

And evaluate at the same time

AO3 is where the marks concentrate and where almost everyone under-performs. Knowing the law is not the same as arguing about whether it works, and the exam asks for both in the same answer, under time pressure.

In a structure you have to drill

Problem questions reward a shape: rule, authority, application, conclusion. It is learnable in a session and it takes weeks to make automatic. That is what tutoring is actually for — not re-explaining content you can read.

Straight answer

What A-Level Law tutoring actually costs.

Across the UK market, A-Level Law tutoring runs from about £20 an hour on the large marketplaces to £80 an hour for specialists, with most sitting somewhere in the £35 to £55 band. Anyone quoting you £20 is almost certainly matching you with a current undergraduate, and anyone quoting £80 is usually an agency taking a cut.

My programmes include a good deal more than the session itself — marked exam answers with written feedback, the learning platform, recordings of every session and WhatsApp support in between — so fees depend on the programme and where you’re starting. I talk them through on a free 15-minute call before anything is booked. The revision modules for the topics we cover come included; they’re £49.99 each on their own.

I am not the cheapest option and I am not trying to be. The marketplaces will always undercut me, and their tutors are often brilliant — they are just usually students fitting a few hours around their own degree. Mine fits around a full working week in law. What you are paying for is that the person teaching you does this for a living, and has done for years.

Choosing anyone, not just me

What to actually ask a tutor.

Four questions worth asking before you pay anybody, including me.

Which exam board, specifically?

OCR H418, OCR H018 and AQA 7162 are marked differently and weighted differently. "I teach Law" is not the same as "I teach your specification". If they cannot name yours, keep looking.

Will I get you every week?

On marketplace platforms the answer is often no. Continuity matters more in Law than in most subjects, because the structure you are drilling has to be the same structure every time.

Have you read the examiner reports?

They are published, free, and almost nobody reads them. They say plainly what candidates got wrong each year. A tutor who has read them can tell you which mistakes are costing the cohort marks right now.

What do I get between sessions?

An hour a week is not much. Ask what you keep afterwards: modules, recordings, a way to ask a question on Wednesday night. If the answer is "nothing", you are buying an hour, not a course.
